Abilene is my hometown. While most people might think a town of 6,500 is tiny, for those of us from rural areas, the degrees of size are more subtle. Abilene is a pretty big town by different standards: big enough for more than one grocery store, for a professional theater, for its own movie theater (formerly), and for a number of restaurants. Abilene is where my parents live, across the street from my brother and his family, and four blocks away from my grandparents. I happened to be in town for Mother’s Day, so there was a big chicken dinner and a few gifts given. My nephews were all there for that. It’s really fun to come visit my parents and be able to walk across the street after my nephews are in bed to hang out with my brother and sister-in-law. This visit we watched a number of episodes of The Office (American version) online, which was fun.

Some of the highlights of my weekend in Abilene included dinner and a walk with my parents, playing with my nephews, chatting on the back porch at my grandparents’ house, and going on a bike ride with my nephews at Brown’s Park. There was so much snow and rain in the winter that everything is incredibly green here…greener than I’ve seen in years. And the weather has been slightly chilly…a really nice change from the already sweltering spring I left behind in Austin. I’ll probably be back in town next month for my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary…I’m looking forward to it!
